iv. education and mental culture.

Lake Torpsjön, Medelpad.

Among the towns of Skåne, the first place both as a residential and
industrial centre is occupied by Malmö, the chief point of arrival and departure for
travellers from abroad to Scandinavia (museum, parks). In the university town
of Lund we find the chief architectural glory of South Sweden — the
Romanesque cathedral with its crypt. Among other sights may be mentioned the
cultural-historical museum, which is the largest provincial museum of its kind
in Sweden.

Skåne is exceedingly well provided with various lines of railways, providing
frequent and rapid communications. There start from Malmö two important State
Railway lines: the one north-westwards to Gothenburg, and the other
northeastwards to Stockholm, with numerous feeder-railways from east and west. In
addition to this, well-appointed steamers ply along the coast of the province,
making it possible for the tourist to enjoy a series of combined journeys by
rail and steamer.

If we go by rail from Malmö to the north-west, along the ivest coast we
pass, after leaving Skåne, the interesting liin of Halland, which is traversed by
a number of rivers where salmon are caught in large numbers; the scenery of
Halland in the north of the province assumes a growing likeness to that of
the Bohuslän coast, with naked rocks and islands. Here lies the popular
seaside-town of Varberg.

Gothenburg, the second city of the Kingdom in size and its most
important seaport — with direct steamboat communications with Great Britain,
Holland, Belgium, France, etc. — has a number of sights, among others, a
public museum, possessing representative collections of Swedish art, model
public parks, etc. North-east of Gothenburg lie the world-renowned waterfalls
of Trollhättan, which, in part, are employed as an immense electric
power-station.
