VERBS 97
is most clearly seen here. It is true that prefixes are
generally unstressed and may therefore not be taken into
consideration as alliterative elements; but to a painter in
sounds like Swinburne, even the most insignificant glidings
and repetitions of sounds play a great role.
1 shall try to prove this by some examples.
II, 356, A man by men fremonstered but by love
Watched with blind eyes . . .
The alliteration of the first line plays on m, but the
desire to fill out with 6-sounds all through the sentence
is clearly perceptible. Bemonster, in the sense of regard
as a monster, is quoted from Swinburne in N. E. D. —
Furthermore:
II, 195, Life within life /’nlaid . . .
Probably the sound-gliding in has called forth the use
of inlay, which is rare in this sense.
IV, 255, . . . And burn me blind and tf/silluminate
My sense of seeing, and my perspicuous soul
Darken with vision . . .
Probably the accumulation of s-sounds here has
influenced the choice of the rare disilluminate.
Another example of such an accumulation occurs in
IV, 272, . . . and seem of mine own self
Dethroned, rf/spraised, (//sseated . . .
This, however, approaches another group of
instances. In a large number of cases we find two or more
verbs with the same prefix coupled together; not rarely
these instances give some new formation or some case of
uncommon use. If by its very nature the metrical motive
is difficult to set down as absolutely certain in the cases
quoted above, there can be no doubt as to its reality in
this latter group of cases.
Take the following instances.
