344 SWEDENBORG’S CORRESPONDENCE. [Doc. 106 .
P. S. The Royal Society in England has been pleased to
send me one of Hauksbee’s thermometers, in order to make
observations with it. It will probably be here by this time
by the yacht.
DOCUMENT 106.
SWEDENBORG TO BENZELIUS.*
Most honoured and dear brother,
By Friday’s post a letter arrived from dear
father, which I enclose herewith. A few days ago there
was sent me by post a treatise on “ Finding the Longitude of
Places,” which has been written by some one in England, of
whom I know nothing. His method seems principally to consist,
in observing the moon when it reaches the meridian, and in
order to find her there, he makes use of another star. But
two things seem to conflict with this method : First that it is
difficult to find out the precise time when the moon reaches
the meridian of a place, which it must pass at its height, and
although other auxiliary means may be resorted to, still the
moon cannot be got there with accuracy, nor can it be known
precisely when this appulsion to the meridian takes place;
moreover it is more difficult to find this when at sea than on
land. Secondly, that it is just as difficult to get the parallax
there correctly as in any other place, so that this method
has the same difficulties in this respect as the other methods.
Moreover, this method really belongs to Kircher, who besides
acknowledges its difficulties. I remain meanwhile with all due
respect, most honoured and dear brother,
Your most obedient servant,
EM. SWEDENBORG.
Stockholm , June 6, 1726.
P. S. I will send you by the yacht to -day this treatise ;
Prof. Buhrman 89 would perhaps like to read it .
To ERICUS BENZELIUS, Upsal.
