NOTES TO VOLUME II.
NOTE 149.
THE AUTHENTICITY OF SWEDENBORG’S DIARY FOR
1743 AND 1744.
Since the publication of Swedenborg’s Diary for 1743 and 1744,
from which Documents 207, 208, and 209, are taken, the admirers
of Swedenborg have been divided as to its authenticity ; and as its
genuineness is still regarded by many as a debated question, it
becomes necessary for us fully to state our reasons for believing in
its authenticity.
The evidence on which we decide in favour of its genuineness is
both external and internal.
The external evidence is furnished by an examination of the
original codex in which this Diary is written, and by a comparison
of the handwriting contained therein with that of Swedenborg in
his acknowledged writings. This was done by the editor of these
documents during his stay in Stockholm in 1871, when he could
discover no circumstance whatever connected with the book that
indicated spuriousness ; the binding, paper, and the whole style of
the book being evidently of the period to which it ostensibly belongs,
and the writing being like that of Swedenborg at that time.
The internal evidence of the genuineness of the document, which
is of greater value, is furnished by the following points, which will
be found discussed at full length in separate notes :
A. References to parts of this Diary in other writings of Sweden
borg (Note 164, vii).
B. The historical character of the persons mentioned in this
Diary verified (Note 160).
C. Collateral evidence respecting Swedenborg’s whereabouts in
1743 and 1744 (Note 163).
