1104 NOTES TO VOLUME II.
but the merit of that blood, which consisted in obedience to His
Father, and in love towards the whole human race, by which He
was induced to undergo death, even the death on the cross, so that
He might bear in Himself the sins both of the Jews and Gentiles,
and thus remove them. Hence He became Righteousness itself, and
indeed He alone ; and hence also the rest in the Christian Church
and also among the Gentiles were justified."
In agreement with this doctrine concerning the blood and merit
of Christ, we read in the Diary for 1744, as follows:
"From this may be seen the greatness of God’s grace by the
merit of Christ and the operation of the Holy Ghost" (no. 19).
"God grants His grace and mercy to all poor sinners who are
willing to be converted, and who with an unshaken faith take refuge
in His inconceivable mercy and the merit of the Saviour Jesus
Christ" (no. 90).
"With God’s grace I conquered in the strife, and the blood and
merit of Jesus helped me" (no. 102).
VII. Imputation of the Justice of Christ. On this point we
read in the Adversaria (Vol. 1, no. 618, p. 415), "From his inmost
root man teems as it were with guilt and putrid sores, for he is so
infested with the poison of the serpent that there is nothing whole
in him. This he derived hereditarily not only from his first parents,
who, on account of forsaking the kingdom of God for the kingdom
of the devil, were condemned to eternal death with the whole human
race, their posterity; but, besides, from his own parents by a long
succession, who heaped up vices on vices, whence they became so
infected, that whatever comes from them, the least as well as the
greatest, is putrid and impure. As such is the case, and Jehovah
God, nevertheless, must be worshipped in holiness ; from what other
source then can the worship of Him, which must be holy in every
respect, proceed, unless from God Himself who alone is holy? For
it can never proceed from man, except by the imputation of the
sanctity and justice which are in Messiah Himself, the Only begotten
Son of God; and, indeed, in such a manner that man who is impure,
in the eyes of Jehovah God appears pure and whole by the sole
intuition of Messiah who has become Justice or Righteousness, and
thus solely by the imputation of His righteousness, and by no means
by the imputation of the righteousness which comes from man by the
works of the law."
That man from himself and from birth is utterly impure, and
appears pure and whole solely by the imputation of the righteous
ness of Christ, is a sentiment which runs throughout the whole of
the Diary for 1744, as may appear from the following extracts :
