1118 NOTES TO VOLUME II.
the inmost is sin; for all that we propose to ourselves is opposed
to that which is spiritual. What it is by which we are governed,
we can easily find out, if we reflect on our loves which accompany
[thought]" (no. 178).
NOTE 167.
ERLAND BROMAN.
Erland Broman was a younger brother of Carl Broman, mentioned
in Note 113. He was born in 1704, became chamberlain in 1731,
assessor in the College of Commerce in 1734, councillor of commerce
in 1739, court-marshal in 1741, and president of the College of
Commerce in 1747. He was created a baron in the same year, and
died in 1757. He is said to have enjoyed the favour of King Frederic,

his death-bed repentance became of no account (no. 5492-5495). In
the same passage Swedenborg shows the reasons why Erland Broman
was identified in his mind with "luxury, riches, pride" (see Document 209,
no. 19). That such was the quality of Erland Broman is also distinctly
stated in the Svenkt Biografiskt Handlexicon.
NOTE 168.
THE DATE OF THE OPENING OF SWEDENBORG’S
SPIRITUAL SIGHT.
The opening of Swedenborg’s spiritual sight was a very gradual
process, as we have shown in the Introduction to Document 208
(pp. 144 to 147), and as he himself has declared in the fol
lowing passage from "Heaven and Hell," "I was elevated into the
light of heaven interiorly by degrees, and in proportion as I was
elevated, my understanding was elevated, so that I was at length
