1142 NOTES TO VOLUME II.
NOTE 188.
M. G. WALLENSTRÅLE.
Martin George Wallenstråle was likewise one of those members
of the Gottenburg Consistory who were opposed to the inquisitorial
manner in which Dr. Ekebom persecuted Dr. Beyer. He was the son
of Bishop Wallin, and was born in 1733. He remained connected
with the Gottenburg gymnasium until 1777 ; was chosen Bishop of
Calmar in 1789, and died in 1807.
NOTE 189.
PROFESSOR L. J. KULLIN.
Lawrence Julius Kullin, Dean Ekebom’s right-hand man in the
persecution of Drs. Rosén and Beyer, was born in 1714. In 1737
he entered the university of Upsal; in 1743 he obtained his degree
of master of arts, and lectured at the University. In 1751 he was
appointed assistant professor of mathematics in the gymnasium at
Gottenburg, and in 1759 ordinary professor. In 1762 he received
holy orders, and in 1763 was created a dean. In 1774 he was
appointed second professor of theology. He died in 1795. Dr. Beyer
spoke of him and Dr. Ekebom as his "open enemies" (see " Hand
lingar," &c., p. 115).
NOTE 190.
PASTOR HEMPE.
Little is known respecting Pastor Hempe, except that he was
one of Dean Ekebom’s followers in his persecution of Drs. Beyer
and Rosén. He was ordained in 1755, and was minister of the
German Church in Gottenburg. He died in 1771. In the translations
of the Gottenburg Consistory not many speeches of his are recorded ;
but he always voted with Dr. Ekebom and Dean Kullin.
NOTE 191.
A. J. AURELL.
Andrew John Aurell, an assessor in Gottenburg, made himself
notorious as the volunteer prosecuting attorney of Drs. Beyer and
Rosén. According to the laws of Sweden he, a complete outsider,
could demand for publication, at his own expense, the acts of the
Consistory of Gottenburg. In this course he was, no doubt, abetted
