grændses i Syd af Drammensveien med dens talrige
smukke Landsteder, mod Vest af Parkveien, mod Nord
af Wergelandsveien og den der nylig opførte Bygning for
den geografiske Opmaaling og det statistiske
Central-bureau og mod Øst af Fredriks Gade, som strækker
sig fra Carl Johans Gade, forbi Universitetets Bibliothek
bygning, det nylig opførte Skulptur museum og det che
miske Laboratorium, til St. Olafs Gade, som forbinder
St. Olafs Plads med Wergelandsveien. Strax ovenfor
Slotsparken ligger Homansby, der danner et af Byens
smukkeste Partier og som gjennem skjære s fra Nord
mod Syd af Oscars Gade og Josephinegade. —
Langsmed den ældre By&rændse ligger Forstæderne Hægde
hougen med Briskeby og Balkeby, Bodeløkken, Kampen
og Vaalerengen, af hvilke de tre sidste navnlig er
beboede af den fattigere Del af Befolkningen.
Den østlige Del af Byen, Oslo. blev, ifølge
Kongesagaerne, anlagt af Kong Harald Haardraade ved Midten
af det Ilte Aarhundrede. I de første hundrede Aar
efter Anlægget blev Byen Bispesæde, og der opførtes
flere Klostre og Kirker, hvoriblandt St. Halvards Kirke,
som var Kathedralkirke i Oslo Bispedømme og var viet
til Kong Olaf den Helliges Slægtning, Halvard
Vebjørn-sen. I Aarenes Løb tiltog Byen saavel i Folkemængde
som Higdom, og i det 13de Aarhundrede var den
Norges største Stad næst efter Throndhjem og Bergen.
I det 14de Aarhundrede var Oslo i Regelen
Residents-stad. I den følgende Tid gik Byens Næringsveie og
dens Velstand mere og mere tilbage, især efter
Reformationen, som medførte Ophævelsen af dens geistlige
■ Christiania.
Gade passes the University Library, the newly built
Sculptor Museum and tbe recently erected Chemical
Laboratory, terminating at St. Olaf» Gade, a street
connecting St. Olafs Plads wtih Wergelandsveien. A
stone’s throw from the palace grounds lies the
beautiful suburb of Homansby, Oscars Gade and
Josephinegaden intersecting it. from north to south.
Oslo, the eastern division of the town, was founded,
according to the Sagas, by King Harald Haardraade,
towards the middle of the 11th century. A hundred
years after, the place was made a bishop’s seat,
numerous churches, monasteries, and convents being erected
in rapid succession, amongst others a magnificent
cathedral dedicated to Halvard Vedbjörnsön, the canonized
kingsman of St Olaf. In process of time the town
increased in wealth and population, and in the 13th
century rivalled even the ancient cities ofBjörgvin and
Nidaros. But in subsequent years the prosperity of
the city suffered a rapid decline, more particularly
during the epoch immediately succeeding the
Reformation, an event attended with the abolishment of
ecclesiastical benefices in countries favouring the new
doctrines. In 1567 the city was fired, lest the Swedish
troops then advancing on the place should take it in
possession ; and after the great conflagration in 1624,
the inhabitants had, as we have seen, to fix their
abode in Christiania, the city recently founded by King
Christian the Fourth. In after years a few habitations
were again erected ; but the glory of Oslo had departed.
The place was regarded as a mere suburb of Christiania,
of which however it now forma a part.
