32. Straiul eller ftmæs. Ved en liden Arm af
Tinnsjøen, der kaldes Vestfjorden, ligger Anløbsstedet
Strand, hvor de Passagerer, som skulle besøge
Vest-fjordalen, afsættes, og hvor man kan erholde godt Logis
til rimelige Priser.
33. Mitterdal« Kirke ligger i Nærheden af
Stationen Lysthus. Kirken er en af Norges mærkeligste
ældgamle Stavekirker, i Byzantinsk Stil, med Svalgange
og Snitværk.
34. Rj ti kan f oh og 35, Oauntft og
Vestfjorddalen. Fra Strand eller Ørnæs (se Nr. 32) fører en
god Vei op igjennem Vestfjorddalen, der udmærker
sig ved sin Skjønhed, og her faar man det første Syn
af Gausta, hvilket er glimrende. — Fra Dale opover
mod Bjukan bliver det stedse trangere og vildere,
indtil der ved Vaa ikke længere er Rum til nogen Vei,
idet Fjeldet gaar bråt ned i den skummende Maanelv,
og den Reisende maa nøies med en smal Fodsti. Efter
7a Times Stræv naar han op til Turistforeningens
Eiendom Krokan, hvor der kan erholdes godt Logis og god
Beværtning.
Fra Krokan er der ikke mange Skridt til Udsigten
til Bjukanfossen. Denne Fos er med Rette berømt
Bom et af Norges vældigste Fossefald; paa denne Side
af Høifjeldet er den uden Sammenligning den største.
Efter Vibes Høideraaalinger er dens lodrette Faldhøide
780 Fod. Den tager sig mest imponerende ud, naar
Vandmassen ikke er meget stor; thi i dette Tilfælde
er dens nederste Halvde skjult af bare Skum og Taage.
Istedetfor at forsøge paa en Beskrivelse af saa store
og ophøiede Naturscener, sige vi kun: „Gaa selv og
Thelemarken.
After the open, well-tilled districts round the
capital and Drammen, comes the Kongsberg valley,
rugged and narrow, with sandy wastes and scanty
vegetation, cutting through the shists of the bottom-rock;
and then, after a transition almost alpine in character;
the ancient quartz rock of Thelemarken, with its
mountains and valleys, the former majestic often in size
and shape, the latter of entrancing beauty, — yet so
peculiar withal, that Nature has here set her stamp
upon the people no less than the place. A lithe and
powerful frame, a speech sonorous yet soft and pleasing,
and which, with costume, habits, and general mode of
living, has undergone but little change in the course of
centuries, are distinguishing characteristics
oftheThele-mark peasant. Every parish has its own peculiarities,
prized and adhered to as the best of ancestral bequests.
In the southern provinces only can the influence of
the outer world as yet be traced. At a distance from
the great high-roads, the tourist must not expect the
comforts of civilized life.
31. Tinnefog. From Tinnsjöen, the Thinnelv
takes its rise; over this river, near the station called
Nododden, there is a bridge where is formed the
beautiful and picturesque waterfull the „Tinnefos"
beside which several works are now erected.
38. Strand or örnsea, by a small branch of the
Tinnsjöen, called Vestfjorden, lies the stopping place
Strand, where passengers intending to visit Vestfjord»
