Øverst paa Torvalmendingen er Byens offentlige
Bibliothek; det bestaar af P. Botten-Hansens betydelige
Bogsamling, som i 1870 blev indkjøbt ved privat
Subskription og dernæst overdraget til Byen. — I
Klub-og Læseselskaberne Den gode Hensigt, almindelig
kaldet Logen (Engen), og Athenæet (Torvalmendingen),
der ere aabne hele Dagen, er ogsaa Adgang for
Reisende. — Arbeiderforeningens prægtige Lokale, ved
Nygaardsveien, bygget i 1860 til Forsamlingssted af
de bergenske Arbeidere, benyttes tillige til
Forelæsnings- og Koncertlokale.
Yed Lungegaarden (saa kaldet efter Yincent
Lunge, som fik den overladt i 1528) staar enkelte
Levninger igjen af det gamle Nonnesæter Kloster.
Bergens Fjelde. Bergen ligger omringet af
sine 7 Fjelde, der have faaet Plads i Byens Yaaben,
tidligere som 7 Kugler, nu som virkelige Fjelde.
Længst mod Nordost, nøgent og bråt reisende sig op
fra Forstaden Sandviken, ligger 1) Sandviks fjeldet.
Adskilt fra dette ved Skrædder dalen, ret op for Byen,
ligger 2) Fløifjeldet med dyrkede Marker, Huse og
Veie langt opover og en stor Jernfløi paa Toppen,
hvorfra Byen sees i Fugleperspektiv. Ovenfor begge
disse Fjelde udbreder sig et vidtløftigt Fjeldparti, som
kaldes Blaamanden. 8) Ulrikken (egl. Alfreken o: den
Alfebortjagende), i Sydost er det høiestö og vakreste
af Bergens Fjelde (2,000 Fod); ved dets Fod ligger
det mørke Fjeldvand Svartediget (før Aalrekstadvatn).
I Vest for Byen ligger fra Syd mod Nord 4)
Løvstakken (1,530 Fod), 5) Damsgaards fjeldet og 6)
Lyder-horn (1,250 Fod), et bekjendt Sømærke, som mod Nord
Bergen.
lOJ. The Museum,— for which the inhabitants of
the city are chiefly indebted to Stiftamtmand Christie,
and which, consisting at first of a private collection
of antiquities only, has now, thanks to the support and
interest displayed in this excellent Institution by the
citizens of Bergen, become a medium of great scientific
value, being at the same time a powerful instrument
for the diffusion of knowledge among the people. In
1865, this large and numerous collection, for which
there was no longer room in the old buildings on the
Lille Lungegaardsvand, was moved into the new and
spacious edifice, erected for the purpose on
Sydnæs-haugen, partly at the expence of the State, and partly
at that of the town. On the ground floor you will
find, — the Old Norse Museum, very complete so far
as the Western Districts are concerned, —
ecclesiastical decorations from the catholic time, a cabinet of
coins and medals, a limited ethnographical collection,
weapons of various kinds from the middle ages, ancient
furniture richly carved, and an interesting collection
of implements and jevelry common in the tracts
surrounding Bergen in ancient and modern times. The
second story contains the collections of Natural
History, those of Norwegian fishes and sea-animals in
particular being very complete. In the upper story
there is a small collection of paintings from ancient
and modern times. Attached to the Museum there is
also a Library (ground floor to the left), the majority
of the works treating of Natural Science. The Museum
is open every Sunday, from 4 to 6 p. m. (in the winter,
from 11 to la. m.), and every Monday, Wednesday,
