der opslog sit Kongesæde paa Nidarnæs. Efter at
have beseiret den mægtige Hladejarl, opførte lian i
996 en Kongsgaard og en til St. Clemens viet Kirke
lidt søndenfor Bratøren. Disse Bygninger forfaldt dog
snart, men Olaf Haraldsøn lod dem atter opbygge
mellem Aar 1016 og 1028. Olaf fandt Døden ved
Stiklestad (1080), men selve hans Død blev til en Seir
for den Sag, han kjæmpede for. Der viste sig nemlig
snart en forandret Stemning hos Folket. Olaf ansaaes
som en Martyr, om hvis Hellighed mange
Undergjerninger anførtes, og han blev som Norges Skytshelgen
dyrket og æret ei alene i Norge, men ogsaa i andre
Lande. Denne St. Olaf’sdyrkelse danner et vigtigt
Moment i det gamle Nidaros’s Historie, og Stadens
Stolthed og Pryd, den herlige Domkirke med St. Olafs
Skrin var Maalet for fromme Pilgrimsvandringer endog
fra fjerne Lande. Da nu Rygtet om Olafs Hellighed
udbredte sig, blev hans Lig gjenoptaget af sin første
simple Grav, lagt i Skrin og sat over Høialteret i
Clemenskirken. Paa det Sted, hvor Liget havde været
begravet, reistes et lidet Kapel, og tæt derved fremkom
en Kilde. Olafs Søn Magnus, opførte noget oppe ved
Elven en ny Kongsgaard og en Stenkirke til Ære for
St. Olaf. Til denne St. Olafskirke, der først blev
fuldført under Harald Haardraade, henflyttedes nu St.
Olafs Skrin. Siden opførte Harald en ny Kongsgaard
et Stykke ovenfor Broen, og noget vestenfor samme
en Stenkirke til Ære for Maria, hvori han selv blev
jordet. Hidtil havde der ikke været faste Biskopstole
eller Kathedralkirke!’ i Norge; disse oprettedes först
under Olaf Kyrres Regjering. Nidaros flk — som

Norangdalen and Urkedalen, whose upper parts are
surrounded by snowy mountains. There are few fjords
in Norway, equalling the Norangfjord in the savage
grandeur of its scenery, and the stranger who visits
it for the first time, feels involuntarily oppressed and
awed by the narrowness of the inlet and the terribly

mountains along the fjord and the bottom of the glen

821. Sykelvsfjorden — a shorter arm of the
Storfjord — branches off due south, and its perhaps
the loveliest spot in Söndmöre, scenery of a softer
character being found here with Sondre Söndmöre’s
wild and fantastic Ijelds. The Sirömshorn, with a
sugar-loaf top (3,150 feet), and the Alpine peaks
behind, covered with immense glaciers, form the finest
of backgrounds for the soft, smiling landscape iu front.
122 sxellexylt, at the bottom of the
Sunelvs-fjord, has grandious environs and a good salmon river,
which in its mouth form a beautiful cataract.
Throndhjem and environs.
123. Throndhjem, the capital of the Stift, holds
a foremost place in the list ofNorwegian cities. Third
in point of population, the coronation-city of the Nor-
