Austro-Hungarian Navy with whom I had the pleasure of
coming in contact.

It had always been my intention to write my thesis for the
degree of Doctor of Medicine in the University of Edinburgh on
Ling’s System of Manual Treatment. As practically I could
only repeat what I had said at Pola, and probably such a good
opportunity for writing anything would not soon again occur
to me, I decided to send the original to the authorities of the
University, who accepted it.

I have made some slight additions and alterations in the
general text, and added four new cases.

All the active movements selected for description can easily
be made or given without any special apparatus.

I am greatly indebted to my friend, Dr. Robert Howden,
Lecturer on Anatomy in the Durham University College of
Medicine, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and to Mr. H. Roscoe Dumville,
for having read through my English edition; and to the latter,
also, for having seen it through the press.
