Preface to the electronic edition

Tietosanakirja (11 volumes, 1909-1922) was the first encyclopedia in the Finnish language. It's title (Knowledge Dictionary) has become the Finnish word for encyclopedia. Read more in Wikipedia.

For some time already, Project Runeberg had hoped to one day digitize this work, just like we did in 2003 with the Swedish Nordisk familjebok, in 2008 with the Danish Salmonsens konversationsleksikon, in 2011 with the Norwegian Illustreret norsk konversationsleksikon, and in 2005 with the much smaller Finnish Pieni tietosanakirja. When we finally got around to this work, we discovered that the University of Toronto had already digitized it between November 2010 and January 2013. Their copy is found at the Internet Archive, from where it has been copied to Project Runeberg, starting in April 2012 and finnished in October 2013. However, some illustration plates are missing there and some pages are out of focus (left-hand side pages in volume 7, such as this one), so we might end up with a remix. The OCR text is our own, ready for proofreading by volunteers like you.
