Knit, lift, light, quit, slit, sweat, wet, and wont also have the
full forms in -en. The old let, tardare, morari, impedire, from the
Gothic latjan, Anglo-Saxon latian, letan, always has letted, not let.
Ås for the rest, it should be observed, that considering the whole
march of the language, this anomaly, which is recruited from the only
tull verbs with final d or t, is likely to have a fortune in expectancy,
since most probably it will in time succeed to the whole inheritance of
the said verbs. Thus SHAKSPERE has: an enshield (for enshielded)
beauty (Measure for Measure II: 4); I fast (instead of fasted) and
prayed (Cymbeline IV: 2), etc. and with the Americans this fashion
seems to be in high favour. Besides, I cannot help observing, that
something of the same phenomenon is also to be found in modern Swe-
dish, though as yet it strikes us as shockingly vulgar. It is very fre-
quent with BELLMAN, when introducing to us some of his grotesque
persons in Fredmans Fpistlar, and as an illustration I give the following
example:
Min skönhet han straxt sig tillegna,
birfilare kalla han mig,
och örfilar kagla och regna
och smattra som kulor i krig. I: 113.
Summing up what has been said here above, we are fain to infer,
that the English strong verbs are now so few, and even these few so
mutilated and changed from their primitive character, that they scarcely
can be said to form a conjugation. On the contrary, the weak verbs
seem to spread about ever more; with seeming simplicity, they actually
form three classes, of which the two, if signs corresponded to sounds,
would also embrace the first class of anomalies here above mentioned,
and the third will in all likelihood sooner or later melt together with
the last anomalous class.
