Denne Efterretning stiller jeg forst, da det formodentlig er
den, der har fremkaldt Rob. Sibbalds Forespiirgsel i Scotia
illu-strata, som udkom 1684, i hvilket Værk Geirfuglen er stillet i forste
Linie i Capitlet om de ham mindre bekjendte Fugle, hvoraf han
onsker noiagtigc Beskrivelser (Cap. VIL De avibus qvibusdam
apud nos, quæ incertæ classis sint, qvorum proinde descriptiones
accuratas desidero), S. 22:
„Avis Gare dicta, corvo marino similis, ovo maximo”.
Nogle Aar senere blev heldigvis denne ikke mindre ved
Fuglelivet end ved Folkelivet mærkværdige Oe Gjenstand for en
udforligere Beskrivelse, og derved ogsaa dens Geirfugle nærmere
omtalte. I Martin s Voyage lo St. Kilda 1698 hedder det: „The
seafowl are, first, gaerfotol: being the stateliest, as well as the
largest sort, and above the size of a Solan Goose*), of a black
colour, red about tbe eyes, a large white spot under each, a
long broad Lill; it stands statelv, its whole body erected, its
wings short, flies not at all; lays ils egg upon the bare rock,
tcAtcA, if tahen aicay, she lags no more for that gear; she is
whole-footed, and has the hatrhing spot upon her brearl, i. e.
a bare spot, from which the feathers have fallen off with the
heat in hatching; its egg is twice as big as that of a Solan

goose, and is variously spotted, black, green and dark; il comes
tcithout regard to any tcind, appears the first of May, and goes
atcay about the middle of June" **).
Saa faa disse Ord ere, indeholde de dog i de af mig
fremhævede Linier saadanne Oplysninger om Geirfuglen, som vi ikke
andenstedsfra have erholdt, og som ere af Vigtighed for os. Jeg
