Why Chriftmas Comes In Winter

THE following is an extract of a lecture
delivered by Dr. Edmund D. Soper, professor of
History on Religion and Missions in Northwestern
University, Evanston. It is given here because it
may interest the readers to know what a well
known authority has to say on this subject. The
professor declared that the birth of Christ is
cele-brated on December 25 because in the absence of
definite data on the date in the New, Testament
reoords, that date had been chosen by the early
church fathers deliberately and after long
conside-ration. This is the time of the winter solstice,
when the sun has gone farthest south, and the
nights are longest and the days are shor test. In
a day when darkness meant inactivity and the
night was feared this brought gloom and dread to
the people. They were not aJble to use the night
and darkness as we are. We turn an electric
