to day and we go about our ordinary duties and
pleasures. Sometimes tbe thought came to them,
what if the sun did not turn north again? What
then? But finally it stopped and they eould
discover that it began to climb the sky again. They
rejoieed, for they felt sure that spring would come
again, t’he g rass and leaves would become green,
and soon the harvest would be ripe again. Is it
not fitting that Chistmas Day should be celebrated
just at this time? The coming of Jesus Christ
has meant a new day for the iVhole world. It was
a new beginning.
China has for inauy eenturies celebrated this
event, as have other nations and races. In the
old Roman Empire the worship of Mithras was
based on this same idea of the re-birth of the sun.
Mithras, their god and savior, was said to have been
born at that time, and his birth was celebrated
December 25. The sun was called “Sol Invictus”,
and the worship of the natural sun and of the
sun of righteousness, Mithras, coincided. The early
Christians took over these ideas of the Romans,
Ohinese, and others have Christianized them making
it easier for them and others even in our day to
accept the worship of the true God and His Son,
Jesus Ohrist, the Son of righteousness more truly
than Mithras or any other so-called son or sun.
