Dr. Soper said tliat this taking over from paganism
ideas and Christianizing them was common in our
early history. The Christmas tree, the mistletoe,
the yule-log, and the bunnies and eggs at Baster,
all have been taken over from paganism and have
no real Christian significance in themselves. ■
Christmas does not come in winter for people
everywhere. It depends on w’here they live. If
south of the equator it eomes in summer. But most
people live in the northern hemisphere, where
Christian! ty was horn. We are not certain even
of the year of Christ’s birth. Arch’bishop Ussher’s
ehronology gives it as 4 B. C., but most scholars
today are more inclined to set it at 6 or even 8
B. C. As the year is uncertain so also the exact
date. The Gospels sihed little light on the question.
The Armenian church, the oldest Christian Chureh
in existence, celebrates to this day the 6th of
Ja-nuary. Other dates suggested for the birthday of
Christ have been March 25 or 28, April 19 er 20,
and even as early as Nov. 18. But the concensus
of opinion of the early church finally settled, in
the fourt’h century, on December 25, using the solar
explanation given above.
The lesson for us today from this study of the
natural explanation of the sfinx of the date of
the birth of Jesus Christ is that as sure as the
summer and spring are on their way when the sun
