America and a noted person far beyond the
bound-aries of this denomination I must therefore
con-fine myself to giving a few of the more important
data of his life and a hrief appreciation of his
work among us.
Dr. William Henschen was horn at Uppsala,
Swe-den, April 11, 1842. His father was a connty
judge and an influential member of the Swedish
parliament. His mother helonged to the noble
fam-ily Munck af Rosensdhöld. The home was noted
for its piety and learning and it was therefore
natural that all the children reeeived a learned
education. Before his sixteenth year he was
matri-culated as a student in the university of his
home-town after a rigorous entrance examination, and
at 21 he reeeived the doctorate in philosophy, a
suc-ess which must be considered an unusual
achieve-ment. Wihile at thé university he experienced a
spiritual transformation which was destined to
de-termine his future career.
After receiving his degree, Dr. H. decided for
the medical profession and spent for that purpose
some time, in Berlin, Germany, but soon changed
his plans and was appointed a teacher in the
Col-legiate school in Helsingborg. During that time
he met, wooed and married Miss Hanna Lilljebjörn
of Karlstad, and as his position was virtually
se-cure for life, the young couple expeeted to make
