leaden plummet of 2 or 3 lbs. weight, and
projecting at right angles from the upper part of this
are two arms of whalebone, each
about a foot long. To these the
hooks are attached. The shaft of
the hook is of tinned iron, rudely
shaped like a fish, and bright.
The hook is double, and very
large in proportion to the fish.
The line is let down until the
plummet feels the bottom, and
then the sportsman begins his
labours by jerking it upwards
with as long a pull as the arm
can take. Bait is unnecessary. Presently a tug
is felt, the line is hauled in, and a wretched
flapping victim is found attached to it.
