GOODS

J I ^HE following table gives the averages for the wood-goods exports for the European
1 timber-exporting countries during the decade 1904—1913 immediately preceding
the outbreak of the Great War.

AVERAGES OF THE TIMBER EXPORTS (RED AND WHITE) DURING THE
DECADE 1904—1913 FROM CERTAIN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES.

Exporting Countries Sawn and planed goods (Cub. met.) Round and hewn (Cub. met.) Pulp Wood (Cub. met.) Total (Cub. met.)
Austria Hungary *) 3,054,878 3,204,395 613,164 6,872,437
Finland 3,095,235 2,201,355 417,140 5,713,730
Norway 1,078,530 419,460 — 1,497,990
Russia 5,307,785 4,53d,1 / 5 1,011,041 10,854,001
Sweden 4,883,554 1,316,791 12,304 6,212,649

*) These figures embrace the average of the exports during the seven years’ period: 1907—1913.

These figures show that, next to Russia, Sweden occupies the foremost place as
regards the export of manufactured timber. On the other hand, with respect to
unwrought timber, round and hewn, and pulp wood, Russia, Austria-Hungary and Finland
all exported considerably larger quantities than Sweden. This signifies that the
manufacture of timber in Sweden is carried on to a greater degree than in other European
wood goods exporting countries. In addition, the fact should be taken into
consideration that Sweden’s highly developed wood pulp manufacture consumes yearly between

5.000.000—6,000,000 cubic metres of pulp wood and besides, the iron industries of the
country annually employ an amount of charcoal, for the production of which about

6.000.000 cub. metres of wood are estimated to be required.

At the present day, Swedish wood goods find a market, not only in Europe, but,
it may be said, all over the world, as will he seen by the following table:
