Harnäs (Skutskär) Pulp Mills.

course of time, one mill
was added after the other,
in proportion - to the
growing need of the
copper mine for timber,
it was not before the last
century, however, that
Bergslaget began to
export wood goods, i. e.,
after the passing of the
Act already mentioned
which gave the country
industrial and commercial
liberty, his including also
forestry and timber
manufacturing. But it soon

proved to be a difficult matter to carry on this industry so far up in the country and also
at different centres, and gradually there arose the plan of transferring the whole of the
saw mills business down to the coast. This was carried out in 1885, all timber export
being concentrated at Skutskär, hear the mouth of the River Dalälven, where it
empties into the Baltic, south
of the town of Gefle.
Since the date mentioned,
this saw mill has gradu
ally increased in size and
scope and, at present, is
one of the most important
in Sweden. It possesses
its own shipping harbour;
everything is run by
electric power, and the greatest
use is made of the most
up-to-date technical
improvements. Every year
about 1,500,000 logs are
