added, the production being further increased by means of the erection of new
buildings and by reconstructions, this being especially the case after 1846, when the old
laws were repealed that forbade free trade in pig iron. More shares were bought in
mines, and the Company’s resources of both ore and timber was secured for the future. The
problem of communications was solved by the construction of a canal in the fifties,
and later on (in the seventies) a railway, planned previously, some 40 miles in length,
was made a reality and has been several times extended, thus placing the Uddeholm
Works in more direct .communication with other railway systems of the country.
Another fact in the development of the^j business worthy of mentioning is the
acquisition of the share-majority in the Storfors Ironworks C:o., in 1908, this placing
the Works at Storfors and Nykroppa under the direction of the Uddeholm Company.
The Uddeholm Works are the most important industrial enterprise in Värmland,

districts of East Värmland, along the lines of communication and at the harbours.
