HISTORY.

HE Billerud Company, Ltd. is a rather young enterprise. Its activity has from the
start been concentrated chiefly upon the production of cellulose, and its history
therefore does not date further back than the origin of the Swedish wood-pulp industry.
The company was, as a matter of fact, constituted the same year as this industry
originated, as the first sulphite factory for practical purposes in Sweden was erected
just at Billerud. This was in 1882, when Mr. G. T. Lindstedt and Mr. V. Follin,
N formerly employed at the Munkedal Paper-mill, founded a sulphite factory at Billerud
where the Bergslagernas Railway cuts the Seffle Canal. This spot is especially well
| ’ chosen. The raw material for the mill could be floated down from the extensive forests
round the Glafs Fjord. The manufactured products could be transported direct by canal
* ‘ from the company’s wharf to Gothenburg, to be forwarded to England and the Continent.
The railway connections with Gothenburg were also good.

The Billerud Company, Ltd. was formed, as mentioned, in 1882. Its first board
consisted of Messrs G. T. Lindstedt, Follin and Malmberg, the latter being a banker. The
original capital was 60,000 Kronor. The factory was to be constructed for an annual
production of 1,000 tons, as it was desired that care should first be taken that the
new industry would stand the test on a small scale before extending it. The works
were started in 1882, when 454 tons of wet sulphite-pulp were manufactured. The
