Résumé.



John Morton, representing the Province of
Pennsylvania in the Continental Congress, was one of the
signers of the Declaration of Independence. On the
question of whether or not the colonies should cut
loose from England and declare themselves
independent, Morton’s vote came to be peculiarly
decisive. The colonies voted as units, Pennsylvania last.
Of its seven delegates, two were absent, two voted
for and two against the declaration. Morton, being
chairman of the delegation, cast his vote in the
affirmative, thereby deciding Pennsylvanias attitude
and in a measure the fate of the resolution before
the Congress, for although the other twelve colonies
had voted for independence, yet one adverse vote
might have stirred up internal dissensions and
jeopardized the cause of liberty.

Morton was a descendant of Morten Mortenson,
one of the Swedish immigrants that founded the
Colony of New Sweden on the Delaware. We have
not the exact date of his birth but there are good
reasons for placing it somewhere between the 6th day
of February and the 1st day of March, 1725. In
works of reference the year is most often given as
1724. This error even appears in the inscription on
his monument. The explanation of this is that in
