The celebration in commemoration of the coming of
the first Swedish settlers to Minnesota in 1850 was held
at Scandia, Washington County, on June 23 and 24,
1925. Scandia is in the heart of the old Marine
settlement and the festivities were held near the beautiful new
church which stands a couple of miles from the spot
where Roos, Fernstrom, and Sandahl secured a tract of
land in the fall of said year. The principal address was
given by Hon. Theodore Christianson, Governor of
Minnesota. Many organizations were represented on the
program, among which may be mentioned the Minnesota
Historical Society by Dr. Solon J. Buck, its
superintendent, the Swedish Memorial Commission by Dr.
Amandus Johnson of Philadelphia and the Swedish
Historical Society by its president. At the conclusion
of the program a procession was formed which proceeded
to the place where the first Swedish settlers of Minnesota
located. Here Gov. Christianson placed a wreath at the
foot of the granite shaft (“Svenskstenen i Minnesota”)
which in 1902 was placed on this historic spot by the
Swedes of the state.
