done under a system and by one person, or nothing
could be accomplished. This person was appointed,
and visited the country and places where, according
to the census, there was a considerable German
population, to ascertain as near as possible the advent
of the first German settlers and the extent of
German population in that locality before the war by
studying the books of original entry, showing the
names of the people, who bought their lands from
the government direct, and the record of marriage
licenses from the beginning of government in Illinois,
lie also had from the reports of the Adjutant General
of I Ilinois a copy made of the names of Germans
who enlisted in Illinois regiments, and searched the
country histories and the biographical sketches
therein for the names of German pioneers. And as a
matter of course, wherever he went, he tried to get
hold of the pioneers and their descendants.
By those means our society has not only been able
to fill tbe Deutsch-Amerikanische Geschichtsblaetter,
which with the beginning of this year entered into
their eighth volume with historical facts of present
and future value, but has collected a great deal more,
which awaits classification and corroboration. While
it has not been an altogether easy work, and did
require much patience and perseverance, still it has
not been without satisfactory results.
