part. The western slope of Iowa is more rolling and
consequently the roads were drier and harder. We
continued our journey westward and finally reached
Council Bluffs. Prom there we had a view of the
great Missouri Valley and Omaha, a small village
on the other side of the Missouri River. Crossing the
Missouri, we came to Omaha, one of the last outposts
of civilization. Next we reached a little village
called Elkhorn and camped near by. This was a
Saturday evening, and we stayed there over Sunday.
We always made it a. rule from the very start to rest
on the Sabbath dav. Besides, our teams needed one
day of the week for rest.
A very sad thing occurred at tiffs place. Close
to our camp there was a small water pool, I think
it was what is called a buffalo wallow. It was quite
deep and full of water. The day was bright and
warm, and some of the boys went in bathing. A
young boy about sixteen or seventeen years old went

in swimming with the rest. No one suspected the
pool to be very defcp and as this young boy was
wading in, all at once lie sank out of sight.
Evidently lie was unable to swim, and as lie did riot come to
the surface it was clear that he was drowning. One
of our party dived down to get him, but came up
without the bow He dived down the second time

and then brought the boy to the surface, We worked
with him as best we knew how, but to no avail. The
spark of life was quenched.
This young man belonged to a party that joined
us in Iowa and stayed with us. He was one of two
brothers, the other being older. They were Germans.
Others of the party were Danes, and I think they
