for building purposes. So the boats were soon ready,
and they were neatly constructed too. Our little
boat-yard created quite a bit of interest in the town.

It seemed that the whole town came out to sec us

build those boats. In a few days they were ready
to launch. When we were ready to start 011 our
voyage we had a Uniitcd States flag made for our
purpose. Before we started all of us went in to town
to say goodbye to the good people of Albuquerque.
They told us we were certainly undertaking a very
risky trip. But we were determined to go. They
washed us the best success and added: “Please write
us if you ever get through to the gulf.” We could
plainly see that they took pity on us, but we
pretended not to notice it. Another handshake and
goodbye, and so we parted.

The river was quite wide and shallow for some
distance below Albuquerque. We were troubled
with sandbars, for eing unused to travel by water
we could not always distinguish the channel. We
often had to get into the water and push the boats
off when they got stuck in the shallows. But we
soon learned to know the channel and could float
right along. Of course, we did not depend on the
current for speed, although it was quite swift most
of the way. Two of us would use the oars and row
and in that way wc made f>0 miles a day on our
estimate. About sundown we would land, prepare
our supper, pitch our tents, eat and then rest. We
were always up early and prepared our breakfast
and noon-lunch so that we could put in all the time
possible making good headway down the river.
