to the university on an official visit together with other
members of a legislative committee. As the solons went
from class room to class room they heard the students
recite in German, Latin, Greek and other languages
that our friend could not understand. So he asked to
be shown to the room where he could hear a language
that would be intelligible to him—Norwegian. To his
great surprise and disgust he learned that that language
was not taught at the university. Was not his language
as good as any and its literature worth studying, and
why should not the children of Scandinavians be given
an opportunity to study the language of the fathers, who
after all perhaps were furnishing the major portion of
the funds for the university? So the loyal Norseman
straightway prepared a bill providing for the
establishment of a Scandinavian department at the university
and secured its passage.
The host of Scandinavians, Swedes, Norwegians and
Danes that have come from the Northland, bringing
with them a deep and sincere love for the language and
culture of their childhood’s home, naturally desire that
their children, though growing up in a new land, shall
also learn to love the language and culture of the
ancestral home. 1 hev teach them at home, send them to
parochial schools, take them along to church, and as
they go away to acquire a higher education they desire
that they then aiso shall have opportunities to study the
language and literature of the fathers.
In states and communities that have a large Swedish
population it is a decided commercial advantage to
have a speaking knowledge of Swedish. Although our
people acquire English more readily than others, there
must nevertheless be for a long time yet a considerable
