all the way from beginning Swedish for the freshmen to
Old Swedish for graduates. Recently a large addition
has been made to the Swedish library, which was made
possible through the generous financial assistance of a
few countrymen in Minneapolis. The additions were
particularly in history and literary criticism. At present
the students of Swedish are preparing to give a play,
“Bröllopet på Ulfåsa/5 which is perhaps the first time
that anything similar has been undertaken in any
American university.
During the past year events have occurred that have
been most gratifying to those that desire to see Swedish
hold a more honored place in our American universities.
Last winter the legislature in the state of Washington
appropriated money for the establishment of a
Scandinavian department at the university of said state. This
happy result was brought about by the activity of the
Scandinavians of the state and in this the Swedes took
the leading part. A few months ago the scholarly and
eloquent Professor David KYvall was called by the
authorities of Washington University to become its
professor of the Scandinavian languages and literatures and
it is safe, to say that under his able and enthusiastic
leadership the department will soon grow strong.
In Nebraska leading Swedes organized a movement
last year looking to the establishment of a Swedish
department at the University of their state. The effort
was successful. A Swedish department has been
established by the regents and Dr. A. K. Anderson, who had
taken a leading part in the preliminary work, was
called as professor in the subject. His ability and
enthusiasm for the subject has been well rewarded and the
department has a good enrollment. He has recently
