smith, who emigrated from Östergötland, Sweden, in
1852, and Carolina Hedén, who had come from
Småland the same year. The boy attended district school
until thirteen years old, when he took a hand in the
support of the family, his father, who was addicted to
drink, failing to provide for them. John, the second
of seven children, first began work in a grocery and
later obtained a situation in a drug store, which he
retained for ten years, meanwhile filling out his
interrupted schooling by home study, in 1886, through
the assistance of friends, he purchased a half interest
in the St. Peter Herald and took editorial charge of
the newspaper. After five years lie was elected
secretary of the Minnesota Editorial Association and two
years later its president. Two years after having
engaged in journalism and politics he was nominated for
the state senate on the democratic ticket and defeated
by his republican opponent. In 1895, ten years after,
he sought the same office and won out, but was
defeated for re-election in 1902. The ability evinced by
aim, both as a journalist and as a state senator, had
attracted the attention of the leaders of the state
democracy, and in 1904 the gubernatorial nomination,
declined by ex-Governor Lind, fell to another
Swedish-Ameriean, Johnson being elected governor by more
than 7,000 majority, despite a state majority of 161,000
for Koosevelt. After two years of eminently successful
service as democratic chief executive of a republican
state he was renominated by acclamation and re-elected
by over 72,000 majority. This remarkable victory, in
the midst of defeat for the balance of his ticket, gave
Governor Johnson national prominence. He was looked
upon as a man of presidential measure. His capacity
