but little capital, began his career as a country
storekeeper at Mineral Ridge, in 1859, and some ten years
later purchased a general store in Boone, which he
conducted for five years. In 1872 be assisted in organizing
the First National Bank of Boone, and was elected its
vice-president. Three years afterwards he closed out
his mercantile business and became cashier of the bank,
which, in 1878, surrendered its charter and was
reorganized as the City Bank. He w7as subsequently chosen
president, and served the institution in that capacity
until his death.

A Republican by conviction, Mr. Ericson early
engaged actively in politics. Tn 1871 he was elected to the
general assembly, and was returned once by his party.
1 e was elected state senator in 1895 and twice reelected.
Senator Ericson, during his later career, gave liberally
of his self-acquired wealth to the cause of education.
In the early nineties he donated to Augustana College,
at Rock island, 111., the sum of $12,500 toward the
purchase of adjacent grounds, and in his last will lie
left to the same institution an endowment fund of
$56,000, $10,000 cash and $46,000 on certain
conditions. In the document, the sum of $5,000 was given
to the newly founded Swedish old people’s home, at
Madrid, Iowa. The city library of Boone, erected at
a cost of $10,700, is a monument to Senator Ericson’s
munificence and bears his name. This library he
subsequently aided in a financial way, and as a member of
the board worked devotedlv in its behalf. In 1900
Augustana College conferred on Senator Ericson the
honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, and the Iowa
Historical Society has recognized the philanthropist by plac-
