arary degree of L. H. D. was given him by Bethany
College and later by Augustana, and that of D. D. by
Wittenberg College, in recognition of his literary
attainments, King Oscar II awarded him the medal
“Litteris et Artibus," and subsequently the decoration of
the Order of Vasa. Dr. Holmes is survived by his wife,
née Sophie Johnson, and a daughter, Esther.
