SWEDE POINT OR MADRID, IOWA.
*
The Second Oldest Swedish Settlement in Iowa.
Founded 1846.
By F. A. Danborn.
In 1845 the first Swedish immigrants came to Iowa,
while it was yet a territory. They came from Kisa
and neighboring parishes in Östergötland. These
immigrants settled at Brush Creek, Jefferson County,
and the settlement was called New Sweden. Peter
Cassel, who was the founder and leading man in this
settlement, wrote many letters home to his friends
in Östergötland. These letters created a good deal
of interest and were widely read. In these letters
Cassel set forth the splendid opportunity for the
future in getting homes of their own in this new
settlement. On this account another party of people
from Västerlösa and adjoining parishes decided to
emigrate and locate in the New Sweden settlement.
However, they failed to reach the said settlement,
as they were lead astray into central Iowa, where
they settled in Boone county, and the settlement was
called Swede Point. They were the first Swedish
People that traveled through central iowa. They
were the first Swedish people that saw the Des
Moines River winding its course through Iowa’s most
beautiful and fertile valley.
In this party there were 42 persons. In May, 1846,
they embarked from Göteborg on the freight sailship,
Augusta, which was loaded with iron to be shipped
to New York, After a voyage of nine weeks and
three days they landed in the New York harbor.
