route along the Des Moines River. The party started
out over a wild and unsettled country. Here and
there they met groups of roaming Indians, or passed
their wigwams in the forest. So one evening they
arrived at Oskaloosa. The rain was pouring down
and everybody was soaking -wet. Shelter could not
he had anywhere. At last they found refuge in an
old leaky log shed. They continued their journey
and reached Fort Des Moines. This was a log
fortress surrounded by a few log cabins. In those days
the whole contents of Des Moines, now the capital
and the largest city in the state, could have been
hauled away in a couple of wagon loads. They
inquired where flour and other provisions could be
bought; but there was nothing for sale. The only
things that could be bought were tobacco, and whiskey
which was sold at 30 cents a gallon. They inquired
where the New Sweden or the Cassel settlement was
located, but no information could be gotten as to the
whereabouts of this settlement. At last they were
informed that a distance up the river there lived a
white man called Gaston. They thought that

continued their journey north along the river over
wild prairies and through dense timbers. They
passed many Indians roaming from one place to
another. Many wigwams were passed in thick
overgrown timber where the wild game was hunted. The

Swedish immigrants in any way.
