the eastern coasts of America which they had called
Markland. Vinland, according to Nansen, belonged
to the realm of romance. Professor Bugge believed
that there were foreign features in the saga
description of Vinland, but that the name itself was a
hor-rowed trait, lie deemed impossible. He gave various
arguments in support of this belief. lie thought it
possible, however, that the name Vinland may have
been given, as was that of Greenland, for advertising
purposes, and not 011 account of the abundance of
sweet grapes. As to the Skrellings (natives of the
new country) he believed that they were real
creatures originally, but that time had caused some
transformation in them before the sagas came to be
Written down.

He concluded by saying that Nansen had stirred
up things in the Vinland sagas, and had shown that
they were a compound of fact and fiction, as was
much else in saga literature. He himself believed
that there were more kernels of truth than Nansen
bad been willing to concede. In his second lecture
Dr. Nansen took occasion to reply to some of
Professor Bugge’s arguments, and incidentally
announced that he had no faith whatever in Adam of
Bremen as an historian, and deemed his allusion to
^inland worthless. lie then proceeded to demolish
He Hvitra-manna-1 and of Icelandic tradition, which,
by the way, Dr. Gustav Storm had done in the 80’s.

After the lecture, Professor Yngvar Nielsen
maintained that Dr. Nansen palpably underestimated the
significance of Ari’s reference to Vinland. He also
took issue with the lecturer on the quality of Adam
°f Bremen’s work. Professor Wille contended that
