strange aspect, the voyagers had ascribed
supernatural qualities to them, just as the Norsemen in
Norway had from time immemorial ascribed such
qualities to the Lapps, though they had been
neighbors for centuries.

In the concluding lecture Dr. Nansen emphasized
the statement that the object of his investigation
was not to deny the discovery of America by the
Norsemen. He thought it highly probable that
they had made the discovery,—especially that
Thor-finn Karlsefne had made a voyage to the west, and
had returned. Professor Nielson on this occasion
contended that the name Yinland Good, which
seems so important in Nansen’s eyes, has not been
shown to have been used until three hundred years

&fter the discovery. The appellation “the good”

is not used in the oldest sources. Professor Hsegstad
supplemented this by the remark that the appellation
came into use to avoid confusion with the name
vindland (Vendland), and added that the Swedish
Professor Söderberg’s supposition that the word vin
m Vinland meant grass or meadow was not well

founded.

Now, what shall we say to Dr. Nansen’s
revolutionary and iconoclastic onslaught?

In the first place, it brings to mind the amazement
a,ud consternation among Scandinavian scholars,
When Dr. Sophus Bugge in the early 80’s published
his studies in Norse mythology. Time has shown
that in many things he was mistaken, and, that on
the whole, he carried his contentions too far. And
his contributions resulted in a series of new
investigations by many scholars, caused renewed
