arctic ice-pack, when the experts of England had
assured him that his ship would be crushed like an
egg-shell. But Nansen had devoted years of intense
study to the subject, and in this process of study he
had evolved a vision of success, to the realization
of which he applied himself with a zeal and a
tenacity that did great honor to himself and to his
country.

There is, therefore, no denying the fact that Dr.
Nansen is an immensely clever fellow. By virtue of
real native ability, long and profound scientific
study, wide and varied experience, he is, indeed,
quite competent to take up some new branch of
knowledge, and, after having devoted himself to
it for a time, to make some clever and original
observations. But that is quite a different thing from
entering such a field, and after having nosed about
for a while, to sit in judgment on the work and
°pinions of men as clever as himself, and who have

given a life-time to this special field of knowledge.

In the matter of the Vinland sagas, Dr. Nansen
might well have made,—and is entirely competent
to make,—clever suggestions for the consideration
°f specialists in this particular field. But when this
man of action, this practical explorer, this modern
mvestigator in the realm of natural and applied
Science, undertakes to enlighten the world on saga
literature,—to pass unerring opiniou on what is good
history and what is fictional therein,—undertakes,
m a word, to play the role of a P. A. Munch or a
Gustav Storm in this very difficult field—then he
goes too far. Sophus Buggc, as I have already
remarked, played a revolutionary role, and he had a
