ish Historical Society of America might be the center for
Swedish studies in America.
The Council has at present under consideration the
establishment of a Historical Commission, with the following
objects :
"1) to collect information about existing manuscript and
printed sources, including public records, relating to the
his-tory of the Swedes in America;
2) to prepare or cause to be prepared, calendars and
indexes to such sources and records;
3) to collect data about Swedish settlements and
organizations in America and about the activities of Swedish
immigrants to America and their descendants in the fields of
literature, art, science, industry and commerce/’
The work of such a commission, the establishment of which
would place our Society definitely in line with other historical
societies in this country, will be materially aided by the proper
organization and cataloguing of our library. I, therefore,
recommend that one fourth, or more, if possible, of the
income of the Society for the coming year be used to employ a
competent person to properly classify and catalouge the library
of the Society.
