butter, 20 cents; cheese, 15 cents; eggs, 12 cents per
dozen. Everything we buy is four times as expensive as
formerly. Cotton cloth a yard and a half wide which
formerly cost 10 cents now brings 75 cents, and
everything else in proportion. Last spring I bought a mare
with foal for $85; I could sell her now for $125. I have
three three year-old horses and twelve head of cattle, and
I intend to buy more this fall. We have twenty-three
hogs which have been fed all winter, eighteen pigs, and
ten sheep. I will probably sell sixteen hogs this fall, and
I expect an unusually good price. The prospects are good
for everything except fall wheat, which froze out almost
entirely. I have thirty-two acres of exceptionally good
corn which, I believe, will yield sixty bushels to the acre.
The weather this year has been unsettled: a wet spring
followed by a long drought. Poor crops will raise next
year’s prices. It will not be necessary for me to buy;
on the contrary, I will have a small quantity of each
variety to sell. By the grace of God we are prospering
and laying up a little each year. For this we have God
alone to thank. You no doubt know that Uncle John and
Jonas have gone to the gold fields, but they won’t make
much because Uncle is ill and they have been unable to
establish individual claims and are compelled to work
for others. Their work is so hard that they can hardly
stand it. Their wages are six dollars per day, but living
consumes half.
There is no hope of the war ending. On the contrary,
both sides are re-enforcing. Last spring 600,000 recruits
were called out. They were volunteers, but now the call
has gone forth for a half million before the 5th of
September. I doubt that many will volunteer, making a draft
necessary. I am not sure but that I will he among those
who are chosen. God’s will be done. I hope the war
will not continue another year, but it is hard to say, as
victory comes from the Lord alone.
I have nothing further to write. Aunt and her children
send greetings. They are in good health. In your next
letter let us know whether or not farms in Sweden are
