would not be right to insist, because the war has brought
so much sorrow. We do not know how long we shall be
allowed to live in peace, because a rumor is abroad that
the enemy is coming to Iowa. But I am not greatly
worried; if the horrors of war are in store for us, we are
to be punished for our sins. Whom the Lord protects
need not fear. It is very noticable that the side reserved
for the men in church is sparsely occupied, while the
women’s section is full. At assemblies of young people
the girls outnumber the men five or six to one. The
number of killed and wounded is appalling, and there are no
prospects that the war will end very soon.
Our new home has many advantages over the old one,
and I like it much better. [1] We have a good level road
to church, and the distance is no greater. I sell butter
and eggs to a man who calls every other week. I believe
I have sold twenty dollars’ worth of eggs, besides
considerable butter. We have four cows. We sheared six
sheep, I have twenty-four pounds of wool. I have begun
to spin, and I intend to weave thirty yards of cloth warped
with wool. A yard is equal to one and one-half aln.
Cotton yarn is ten dollars per skein.....

relatives and friends.....
Uncle Sandahl and Jonas Peter are in the gold fields,
but they are not mining much gold. Uncle is bothered with
backache. They write that they are coming home this
fall. Our brotlier-in-law Alsin, who is married to Oliver’s
older sister, is there also. He makes wheel-barrows and
earns six dollars per day.
