you much linen....... Supply yourselves with each a tin
pan, tin cup, and spoons. Provide yourselves with food
in case you are unable to eat the fare furnished on hoard
ship. Dry the bread thoroughly. Include two cheeses and
some dried meat. Take a box of provisions for the party.
When you land in America you will find many who will
offer their services, but beware of them because there
are so many rascals who make it a business to cheat the
immigrants. Bring rollers for weaving and shuttles, but
not too small. I will buy them of you. They can be had
here, but they are expensive. This year I have woven
nearly ninety yards of cloth, nearly all wool. Our new
church is completed, so services have been held there since
Christmas, It is very attractive. This settlement is
growing so rapidly that the church is crowded with Swedes.
Last October we took a trip out west, about two hundred
miles, [1] to visit my brother-in-law and sister-in-law. We
saw a remarkable amount of unoccupied land, and I
realized that there is still plenty of room for immigrants. A
new church has been built in that settlement........ I
will bring my letter to a close. Our letter is short this
time because we hope to converse soon. If you decide to
undertake the journey, write as soon as possible in order
relieve our uncertainty. Perhaps you will be ready
sooner than you think. I must close my little letter with
thousands upon thousands of greetings from us to all of
you—no exceptions—but especially are my parents uppermost
in the thoughts of their daughter.

                                        Mary Helena Stephenson,

Tell me, mother, if you are going to America against
your will. I hope you are willing—if you are, the journey
win be easy.

May the grace and peace of God be with you!

We are writing to tell you that we are blessed with
