slumber by a strange noise at the door. It was repeated
again and again. Thinking there might be some one
outside with evil intent, I jumped out of bed and
inquired who was there. I received no reply. After a
little, the hanging at the door was repeated and I asked
again who it was; but still no reply. I had an ax in the
cabin and told Mr. Dahlstrom that if the noise was
repeated, to open the door and I would be ready to
defend ourselves against any one who might have come
to harm us. Just then there was another bang. I look
my position and Dahlstrom threw open the door, when,
lo, there stood a steer who had undoubledly been
harrassed by the mosquitoes until he had chosen to rub
himself against the wall. When we threw open the door
he was as astonished to see us as we were to see him.
Bloodshed was averted and peace reigned once more.
The Grasshoppers
I had frequently read from Exodus, tenth chapter,
the following: “When it was morning, the east wind
brought the locusts, and the locusts went up over all
the land of Egypt and rested in all the coasts of Egypt.
Very grievous were they; for they covered the face of
the earth so that the land was darkened; and they did
eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees
which the hail had left; and there remained not any
green thing in the trees or in the herbs of the field.”
But I had never expected to see anything like it myself.
They who were in southwestern Minnesota during the
grasshopper years find no difficulty in believing the
story of Moses. The locust invasion of Egypt was but
for a season; with us they remained five years.
