on the Delaware. In 1860 the Augustana Synod
admonished its pastors to spend some time every Sunday in
catechizing the young and in instructing them in the
study of the Bible. No innocent diversions were provided
to take the place of the forbidden ways of the world.
Even at the colleges there were no associations of young
men until the seventies, and there were no Lutheran
young people’s societies for both sexes until the eighties.
Higher Education in the Fifties
The story of the first beginnings of Swedish Lutheran
higher education in the fifties and sixties naturally
groups itself around four men, William M. Reynolds,
L. P. Esbjörn, T. N. Hasselquist and Erik Norelius.
Esbjörn and Hasselquist were the first Swedish Lutheran
pastors to arrive, and both were strong educators and
successively in charge of the chief educational work in
the Augustana Synod. Norelius was the first student.
He arrived in the United States in 1850, seventeen years
of age. He wanted to complete the education begun in
Sweden, in order to fit himself for the ministry. He
betook himself to Andover, Illinois, to seek the advice
of Rev. Esbjörn, who had arrived in 1849. In 1851
Esbjörn accompanied him to Capital University, a
Lutheran college at Columbus, Ohio, where aid was
offered to a poor Swedish student who would fit himself
for the ministry. Dr. Reynolds, (originally, it was
rumored, a Presbyterian), was the President of this
college and farsighted enough to foresee the need for
Swedish Lutheran workers. He was a real scholar, with
a mastery of the Swedish language which he has proven
