Chicago, May 3, 1853.
...That the words, “He that believeth and is baptized”,
may be translated, “He that believeth and hath been
baptized”, etc., I cannot at all sanction, according to my own
slight knowledge of Greek... I was already baptized
before I received Brother Hasselquist’s letter It might
not be amiss to say something about our countrymen in
Chicago, according to the news which I have gathered.
The Lutheran congregation, which Brother H. has
organized here, is probably quite scattered. The one Unonius
has, is, it seems to me, a refuge for the most open Tices
which I have yet seen hidden within a Christian
congregation. Unonius has gone to Sweden and has appointed a
person who, according to the information I have had, has
been expelled, as a student, from the Swedish Universities
... [After a dispute with a Methodist, he] kicked him out,
and then followed him with a stick and hit him, as he was
descending the stairs, (for my friend, N[ordling] would
not defend himself, but instead, when hit on one cheek,
turn the other also). So that he bears the marks (the
worst bruises I have seen) on his body, and rejoices over
the opportunity to suffer for the sake of the Lord. The
Lutheran congregation seems to follow its leader; because
I do not believe that missionary Fjellstedt has suffered
much worse persecutions among the heathen than the
Methodists (who generally are sincere Christians) have
here. They attack them at their public services,
blaspheming and scoffing at every word uttered there, publicly
and by laughing and yelling. I was a witness of this last
Sunday and, also, last evening...
