Only two of tlie species from the ,,M i c h a e 1 Sar s“ (see Gigantocypris Millleri and
Cypridina (Macrocypridina) castanea) have been treated in the present work. All the other
Ostracod species of this expedition will be treated in a special work that I am preparing.

The first impulse to my studies of the marine Ostracods came from my highly esteemed
teacher, Professor A. Appellöf, Upsala. It is with real pleasure that I take this opportunity
of expressing to him my sense of gratitude — which has become more and more profound in
the course of years — for the untiring interest with which he has followed the development
of my work and for the never failing kindness and sympathy he has shown me on the numerous
occasions when it was necessary to ask for his help.

To Professor A WlRÉN, the head of the Zoological Institution of the University of
Upsala, where, as I pointed out above. the greater part of this work was carried out, I beg to
express my gratitude for all his kindness and interest during the past years.

At the same time I wisli to thank the following persons as well for the help they have
rendered me in connection with this work: Professor H. ThÉEL and Phil. Dr. N. Odhner, Swedish
State Museum, Stockholm, Dr. H. ÖSTERGREN, Kristineberg, Professors G. 0. Sars and
T. Odhner, Christiania, Professors G. W. Müller and G. S. Brady, Dr. M. v. Davidoff,
Laboratoire Russe de Zoologie, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Dr. J. RICHARD, Musée Océanographique
de Monaco, Mr. Henry Alexander, leeturer in English at the University of Upsala (for his
skilful and untiring work in translating the present work), Herr G. Liljevall (drawings of
some figures; see Philomedes (Scleroconcha) Appellöf i), Herr J. IV. Englund (Indian ink
reproductions of most of my drawings of the group Cypridiniformes), Fröken Amy WÄSTFELT
(Indian ink reproductions of my drawings of the Halocypriformes and Poly copif ormes, some
of the figures of the Cypridiniformes and ail the figures in the general part of this work)
and Fröken Gerda Jungberg (the first two drawings of Cypridina (Siphonostra) spinifera).

Finally I wish to tender my heartfelt thanks to Herr H. Mannheimer, Bank Director,
of Gothenburg. Owing to the present difficult conditions and the abnormally high prices, the
printing of this treatise seemed almost impossible, and it is only because this exceedinglv
generous benefactor stepped in and, together with some friends of his, made the financial side
secure that I have been able to have it printed.
