In the Ostracod lit orature too there is lamentable inconsistency and confusion in
the denomination of certain limbs, especially with regard to the three posterior ones. This is
due to a great extent to the very faet that the funetions and not tlu* homology of these organs
have been taken as a basis for the terminology. Thus J. 1). Dana. the first writer to interpret
the appendages of the C y p r i d i n i d s correetly. narnes the three posterior limbs as follows

in his work of 1852.* ** j the second pair of maxillae ( the fifth paii of limbs)
In the C ypridini d s , .. third • • „ „ ( .. sixth •• )
1 .. foot ( ,, seventh .. „ )
i .. second pair of maxillae ( ., fifth ., -, )
ln the C y p rids j .. first .. feet ( .. sixth -, )
! .. second ( ,. seventh - „ )
I ,. first -, - - ( .. fifth ,. » o )
Tn the C \ t h e rids ,, second „ » o ( ., sixth ,, „ „ )
1 ,, third „ „ •• ( ,, seventh ,. -, )
AA e hud the same terminology also employed, for instanc e, by G. 0. Sars. 1865. C. Cl.Al s.

1865, G. S. Brary, 1868 a and b, and on the whole by G. S. Brada and A. M. Norman. 1889
and 1896. — G. O. Sars has also used this terminology on the whole in his work of 1887.
()nly in the case of the last two pairs of limbs in the Cypridinids are there variations
in this work; these limbs are called either the next to the last and the last pairs of limbs or
the first and the last pairs of limbs.

The terminology of the appendages used by G. \V. MÜLLER in his large monograph of
1894 is also very inconsistant- — perhaps even more than that of the other autkors. Thus in
the special part of this work the three limbs in question are called:

the second maxilla ( = the fifth pair of limbs)

I

In the G y pr i d i n i d

I n the H a 1 o c y p rids
and Cypri d s

In the N e s i d e i d s and
C y t h e r i d s

..Fuß“ and the fifth and sixth limbs in the Cvtherellids are called the third and fourth
post-oral ** limbs. In the general part of this work G. AA’. Müller usuallv calls these three

first limb ( sixth „ )
cleaning ( seventh -, )
maxillar ( fifth ., , » )
first ( sixth ,. -, )
second „ ( seventh „ )
first - ( fifth ,. » )
second ( sixth ,, , » )
third V ( seventh .. , „ )
work the fifth limb of the P o 1 y c o p i d s is termed simplv

* Willi regard to these appendages in the Halo ry prid s this writer has eommitted very serions mistakes.

** For I lu* I orm pos!-oral soo p. 21 below.
