and was on the Point of being conveyed back again to be sold to
satisfy his Owner’s Expences, when he was fortunately ransomed, and
placed at a School for Instruction in the Christian Religion, until
Opportunity offers, agreeably to his anxious Wishes, of being restored to his
Father. He is marked as is customary with the Children of Kings in
that Country. He has been examined in religious Matters, and was
afterwards baptised at his own Désiré. Ön the other Side are a few
Lines written with his own Hand. N. B. His Father, the present King
of Mezurado, was educated at Liverpool, at the Expence of the
Slave-Merchants.
Handskriften på kortets baksida lyder: »Peter Panah Son of Peter the
present King of Mezurado ön the western Coast of Africa». I samma syfte
trycktes ett blad, utan titel, som börjar med följande ord:
*The reasons which I now beg leave to mention for soliciting the interference
of a benevolent public in behalf of this poor African, are, in the first
place, his having fallen into a state of severe illness; and lastly, my
being ön the eve of quitting this country . . . Undert. C. B. WADSTRÖM.

Detta upprop till allmänheten inbragte dock ej mer än ,£ 26. 6. 0, till
hvilken summa Wilberforce bidrog med 20 £ (Essay ön Coloniz, II, s. 270).
En handskrifven nota af Wadström öfver »Expences made ön the African
Printz Peter Panah» visar att, friköpssumman inberäknad, samtliga kostnader
för hans kläder, skolgång m. m. intill d. 27 dec. 1789 uppgått till £ 74. 4. 3.
Ett antal bref från James Dempster, Croydon Surrey, hos hvilken Peter
Panah gick i skola, innehålla underrättelser om hans hälsa och kraf på
betalning för hans inackordering och undervisning. Den 5 nov. 1792 var ett
belopp af £ 4. 0.2 ännu obetaldt, och Wadström, då bosatt i Manchester,
hotas med lagsökning.
