eaten by the people in these districts, though they
are roasted and eaten in great quantities by the
Arabs. It was but small consolation to see a load of
hay being driven home over this ravaged plain;
the hay had probably been cut before the locusts
came. But twilight was falling, and wc had to go
home. It was a remarkable sight to see how sharply
marked off was the tract where the swarms were :
a short way off the maize-fields were still standing
green and unharmed. But against the darkening
sky here and there wc could see locusts whirring
along before the light wind, perhaps forerunners of
what was to come. This would depend on the way
the wind should blow in the next days.
Our kind hosts wished very much to show us the
various aspects of their remarkable country, and
they were particularly bent on our håving a good
impression ofall its sources ofwealth and possibilities
for the future. There were the oil-fields on the
southern plain, and the fisheries, and the great
openings for agricultural development, sulphur and
mineral deposits, and much besides.
Early next morning (Wednesday, the Bth of
July) the two Presidents, Quisling, and I went by
tram along the coast southwards over the lowlands.
In the same tram was a band of young students of
both sexes from the University of Kharkov in the
Ukraine, who were travelling to study the Caucasus.
At a station where wc made a stop they came in a
ceremonious deputation, and a speech was made in
German expressing their gratitude to me for håving
helped to relieve the distress in the Ukraine during
